About this guide
Garden Room Life is an independent guide for people in the UK thinking about building a garden room. It exists because the questions people ask most, about planning permission, real costs and what goes wrong, are often answered by the companies selling the rooms.
How we write our guides
- Official sources first. Planning and building regulations guidance comes from the Planning Portal, the Welsh Government, mygov.scot and nidirect, and is linked on every page.
- Every figure is sourced. Prices come from published UK price guides, with the source and date shown.
- Plain English. We explain rules in terms of what they mean for your garden.
- Kept up to date. Each page shows when it was last checked.
How the site is funded
The guides and tools are free. If you ask, we'll suggest garden room companies that cover your area and, only with your say-so, introduce you to them. In future, companies may pay us for introductions. That never changes what we write in the guides.
The limits of this guide
We explain the national rules clearly, but your council has the final say on planning and building regulations, and local rules can differ. For anything you're unsure about, check with your council before you build.
